We drive to Baltimore and/or DC every year but are just starting to keep track of homeschooling events there. COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURGH is the biggest of these but Mount Vernon is not bad & I am sure there are plenty more!

3. At the same time as Williamsburgh: Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center also offer Homeschool programs September 11-26, 2010. The fee is $10.25 per family member (youth or adult) for general admission to both museums. Children under age four are free. Homeschool ticket holders can visit both museums as many times as they like during the date range. The fee also includes one optional hands-on program and one optional guided tour of Jamestown Settlement and the Yorktown Victory Center. Classroom capacity is limited to 25 people for hands-on programs. Please register in advance to ensure a place in the program. Walk-ins will be accepted if space is available.

(Newport News) Virginia Living Museum Homeschool Day: March 3, 2010: The Virginia Living Museum in Newport News will open its classroom doors to homeschoolers with a selection of fun and engaging classroom programs that highlight important natural science and earth science concepts for elementary and middle school grades. Two and under are free for the exhibits only. We have a wonderful area on our second floor that was created with the younger children in mind. I Explore is a restricted area for children under 5 years of age and it is wonderful! They will touch, play and learn all on their level…. A Great Area! The IMAX Theater is one area that we do not recommend until a child is about 5. However it is up to the parent discretion.

Home School Days are for all school age children (ages 5 and up to 18).
During Home School Day we offer you and your children the opportunity to visit the Village and participate in hands-on activities and participatory programs. This is a great opportunity for children to gain exposure to many aspects of 1830s New England life in an interactive way. Also, special performances and demonstrations are planned for all audiences throughout the day. Specifics on the day's activities will be posted closer to the date.

Pre-registration begins four weeks in advance of the date. If you're interested in being notified about home school programs, and are not already on our email list, please contact our Education Department.

From last year: Admission is free for Members, Sturbridge residents, and children under three. We offer home school families a reduced Admission price of $7 per person on Home School Days and on most weekdays during the school year. Children are always $7 but Adult Admission is regularly $20 per person. This reduced Admission is offered on M, T, W, Th, F, and one Sat a month during
the school year. Attached is the Home Schooling at OSV Calendar. It excludes holidays and school vacations.

During Home School Day we offer you and your children the opportunity to visit the Village and participate in hands-on activities and participatory programs. This is a great opportunity for children to gain exposure to many aspects of 1830’s New England life in an interactive way. Each homeschool event in the year has a different focus and activities to take part in. You will receive an email notification approximately a month in advance of the event date that alerts you to the theme and activities and to the availability of the online pre-registration process.

From last year: Special performances and demonstrations, inspired by the Theme, are planned for audiences throughout the day in the Village. Also, visit the Village Craft Center to take part in a quick hands-on activity. For children ages 6-18. Opportunities at this location are on a first come first served basis. Activity fees are between $5-10 per activity.

Studios are age specific. Please register your child for only those Studios for which they are age appropriate. Also, we recommend that you register your child for no more than two Studios giving you time to visit and take part in the activities in the Village. For those not old enough to
participate in Studios, a Little Learner’s play area will be available for younger siblings and their parents to pass the time in the Museum Education building.

We offer home schoolers the opportunity to take part in 50-minute hands-on Studios which are taught by a Museum Teacher in the Museum Education building. A maximum of ten participants can register per Studio. We offer 8 to 12 age-based (example: Ages 5-7, 8-10, 11-14, and 15-17) themed Studios per hour. We offer 3 to 5 hours of Studios. We recommend registering for no more than two Studios per child. Each Studio is $5 per child.

Lunch will be sold at the Village Café counter. The Village Café will be serving pre- made sandwiches, hot soup, baked goods, water, juices, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. Limited seating will be available. For those closer to the Bullard Tavern in the Village at lunch time, the Bullard Cafeteria will be open. For those bringing your own lunch, seating will be available in the Lunch Room at Museum Education. Please understand that food and beverages are not sold here.

Remember, included with the Admission, are many performances and demonstrations in the Village to enjoy throughout the day. Information about these activities will be listed in the email notification and posted on the website Daily Event Listing a week in advance of the event day.
Also, consider participating in a craft at the Village Craft Center which is open from 9:30- 4:30. There is an additional $5-$10 fee per activity. These activities do not take reservations but will be available to you at your leisure. This will also be posted in the email notification.

• May 13: Right Outside the Kitchen Door: The Garden Part I, Seed Starters 1-3 pm Home School students and instructors are invited to Historic Speedwell for the first part of our garden series where students will get their vegetables ready for the spring planting.

  Home School students and instructors are invited to Historic Speedwell for the second part of our Garden series where we will plant our seedlings in the kitchen garden. • July 8: The Dream of Steam: Steam Power in the 19^th Century 1-3 pm
  In ‘The Dream of Steam’ program, students will learn about the impact steam power had on early America. They will also participate in a hands-on activity which will result in the construction of a model steam engine.
  
  
• August 12: Author! Author! Creative Writing in the Museum Setting 1-3 pm
  Museum artifacts can inspire artists of all kinds, including writers. During this creative writing workshop, students will view different artifacts and exhibits and have the opportunity to learn about writing.
  
  
• September 9: Right Outside the Kitchen Door: The Garden Part III, Harvest 1-3 pm Home School students and instructors are invited to join us for the third and final part of our Garden series. During this program we will harvest many of the fruits and vegetables that have been growing all season and talk about the importance of the harvest in history.
  
  
• October 14: Arts Fair! 1-3 pm Our fourth annual Arts Fair! Students will be able to enter their science, craft, history, or agriculture projects to be judged based on content and presentation. The winners will receive fabulous prizes!
  
  
• November 4: Practically Beautiful: Historic Crafts 1-3 pm During this session, students will discuss historic crafts such as embroidery and tin punching, learn about the need for these crafts, and learn the skills to complete a project of their own.

"On Winter Home School Day we offer you and your children the opportunity to visit the Village and join in hands-on activiities and participatory programs. This is a great opportunity for children to gain exposure to many aspects of 1830s New England life in an interactive way.

On this Home School Day, learn about traditional winter work and play activities. See maple sugaring as it was done in the early 19th century. Learn about the history of maple sugaring from Molly Geet, an 1830s traditional Native American Doctress. Observe maple sugar being made and learn about how it was used in cooking."

Here are some answers to some common questions:

1) Do we have to stay the whole week

No. You can stay for just one day if you would like. We have been up there a ton of times, and I would say that it would be best to stay a minimum of 2-3 nights, to fully enjoy the experience.

2) Do I have to like horses to go?

There is fun to be had all day long and all night long. You can do there scheduled activities all day (crafts, games, workshops, etc) and/or go riding. There is miniature golf, tennis, rock climbing walls, trails to walk on, water park, pool, volleyball (indoor if it rains), game room, etc, etc. You do not have to ride horses to enjoy the experience. You can just chose to go for a walk on a horse. They will have a "how to ride" demonstration in the morning, so that you feel comfortable before you get on the horse.

There are different entertainers every night from music, to magicians, to comedians, etc. The indoor pool is so relaxing and fun to throw balls in the dumping buckets. There is tons to do!

Homeschool students, families and teachers: be our honored guests for full-day access to Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex shows and exhibits. Museum of Natural History and Planetarium (Providence, RI) seems to have a homeschool adventure almost every month. Advance registration required.

Mystic Seaport Educators' Weekend: usually in April - Educators and their families (up to four people total) are admitted free to Mystic Seaport – The Museum of America and the Sea – as part of Educators' Weekend sponsored by the Museum. Teachers, administrators and support staff are welcome. Free admission will be granted upon presentation of a school or union ID card or a copy of school letterhead.

July 19: Totally Telegraphs: The Role of the Telegraph in the Civil War 1-3 pm, $5/student: During the Civil War, telegraphs were relied on for communicating between troops. Become an Union or Confederate soldier tapping out Morse code to your troops to save the day! Students will take an interactive tour of the newly restored Factory building and then crack real Civil War coded messages using telegraph models!

August 13: Museum School 1-3 pm, $5/student: This program teaches the students about how museums work. What does a curator do? How are objects kept so that they will be able to be displayed for years to come? How should museum educators tell others about the objects?

September 10: Right Outside the Kitchen Door: The Garden Part III, The Harvest, 1-3 pm, $5/student: Home School students and instructors are invited to join us for the third and final part of our Garden series. During this program we will harvest many of the fruits and vegetables that have been growing all season and talk about the importance of the harvest in history.

October 8: Arts Fair!, 1-3 pm:
Our third annual Arts Fair! Students will be able to enter their science, craft, history, or agriculture projects to be judged based on content and presentation. The winners will receive fabulous prizes!

November 5: Open Hearth Cooking 10 am -3 pm, $10/student: In November, students will have the opportunity to cook a meal on the hearth! We will also discuss food production in the early 1800s and the importance of nutrition.

NOTE: Please note that registration for the programs this year will close the Monday before the program at 3 pm, NO EXCEPTIONS. Enrollment is open and easy; you may pick and choose which topics and dates best suit your student’s needs. You will know that your student is registered when you receive a confirmation email. A confirmation email will go out for each class in which your student is enrolled. Please do not assume that your student is registered without the confirmation email. Registration is open as of 7 January 2009, so please sign up as early as you can. Once the classes are full, we will take a wait list. If the wait list becomes long enough, we will hold another class on that topic. Bump over dates will be announced once the original dates are filled.

March 12: Making the Connection 1-3 pm, $5/student: Students will build a basic telegraph, send a message using “the code,” and learn the historical impact of the telegraph and how it forever changed daily life. They will also have the opportunity to visit our brand-new, state of the art exhibit in the newly restored Factory Building.

April 9: Cast From The Past 1-3 pm, $5/student: Students will learn the historic process of sand casting, make a mould, and create a casting to take home. While the castings are drying, students will visit our ironworks exhibit and participate in an interactive activity.
