January 6-17 "Nearly Lear" buy tickets through New Victory Theatre (Manhattan) but at the Duke on 42nd Street, 65 minutes. Grades 9-12 / Ages 12 & up: Susanna Hamnett plays the Fool – and every other character – to tell the story of King Lear in an original, mischievous and poignant adaptation of the Shakespeare.

I enjoy going to shows where there is a question period with the actors afterward - or a related workshop, especially if I have to travel far for the event. Workshops for "Reinventing Shakespeare's Nearly Lear" at New Victory Theatre on January 15th, at noon or 4:30pm ($17). For ages 11 & up. Since it has become so difficult as homeschoolers to attend New Victory's "one school time" shows. that may be the way to go.

"Hi Homeschooling Families:

Greetings from the Schiff Nature Preserve! My name is Angela Gorczyca and I am the new environmental educator. I would like to invite you to participate in the Homeschool environmental education program we are offering at the Schiff Nature Preserve in Mendham. The program begins this September and will run in three semesters through May. We will offer monthly classes that relate to a seasonal topic and we will repeat the curriculum on a four year rotation. Each two hour class will focus on a specific theme and include a combination of hikes, games, crafts, and outdoor and indoor activities.

The classes will be offered once per month on Fridays. Lessons will offered from 9:30 to 11:30 am for grades K- 6th and from 1:00 - 3:00 pm for grades 7th through 12th.

These are dates and topics for the upcoming Fall semester on Meadow Ecosystem are as follows:

September 23rd: Butterflies
October 14th: Flowering Plants and Seeds
November 18th: Deer

The classes will run rain or shine with indoor activities provided in the event of extreme inclement weather.

Our pricing schedule will be $40 per child per semester for members and $55 per child per semester for nonmembers. If you would like to try a class, the cost will be $15 for members and $17 for nonmembers. There is no fee for parents to attend classes but we expect that parents act as “additional hands” to assist with shepherding and policing during class times. We ask families to call to register beforehand and pay by check.

Cancellation Policy: If a group cancels within the week preceding the program, they will lose a $5 registration fee per child. Once the semester begins, there will be no refunds given for cancellations.

This November, Boston College will also be opening its doors for its own Splash program. The Free Union Homeschoolers present the Journey of Energy present "The Journey of Energy and the Power Down Challenge"

An evening of presentations, skits, energy and money saving ideas and "The Journey of Energy" movie. We also have a number of displays by those involved with our project including a green architect and the local watershed ambassador. The children's work, including our scrapbook, artwork including T-shirt designs and their science fair projects, will be on display during the course of the evening.

Our host for the evening is the Liberty Township Environmental Commission. The study was made possible by a grant from PPL.

The Free Union Homeschoolers will have a booth at the Liberty Township Community Day on Saturday June 11th from 12-4pm (raindate Sunday June 12th-same time) and will be explaining to visitors how to read your electric meter, use a Kill-A-Watt meter and a thermal leak detector in order to save energy and money. They will also be giving away free CF light bulbs as part of Project Porchlight.

essential for their talent development. Case studies used throughout the

There are places left in the archaeology dig led by professional archaeologist "Big Dog" Geof Purcell that Mary Ann O'Rourke is hosting at their farm in Califon, NJ (near where 287 & 78 cross in NJ).

June 28-July 1, Tuesday - Friday, 10am - 3pm

The theme this year is "The Neolithic Aegean".

(It's a brand new scenario, for those of you who have attended previous digs...!) If you have not heard of The Archaeological Perspective's digs it is a week camp where students get to do real archaeology in a kid way. These are real scenarios, real artifacts, and real thinking to figure it out. Dig in the morning & see slides & play games (like "Settlers of Catan" to reinforce the concepts in the afternoon. Friday is a "museum", students telling the story & a themed potluck.) This one is timed so that homeschoolers & "brick & mortar" students can both attend. You can make it be as big a part of the your kid's education as you want.

Dig groups have always been very forgiving - if you want to bring more modern beautiful fish stew, or Aegean shrimp salad or other Greek recipes I am sure it would be eaten! There are usually at least one vegetarian and some food allergy, so check during the week, and please label food ingredients. If you are camping out to attend the dig (real camping or at a local friend/relative/hotel) we will also need drinks, etc. so just be the one to sign up early for those things. (or, if you found a local bakery with baklava, I'm sure that everyone would love you.)

A mystery is brewing at the Smithsonian Institution, and the scientists there want the help of the nation’s middle schoolers to solve it. Children and teens aged 11–14 can get involved in uncovering the mystery in Vanished, an online science-fiction interactive mystery event that starts April 4.

Students can sign up for the event, conducted by the Smithsonian and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at The Education Arcade. The mystery, which is unveiled during the course of the eight-week event, involves a fictitious environmental disaster. Each week, participants will get clues online that will allow them to come up with hypotheses about the cause that can be tested, debated and refined.

As part of the event, players get an assist from real-world Smithsonian scientists in areas such as forensic anthropology, paleobiology, and entomology. Scientists will have videoconferences online, and participants can send them questions that will be answered in real time. Students will be asked to collect real data, such as documenting a species in their neighborhood. They can upload pictures to the Web site and compare their finds with field guides. Some players near 20 or so Smithsonian-affiliated museums can find clues inside.

Clues can also be gathered from several games that will be available on the site. As players participate, they will gain achievement points, just as in video games.

University of Ireland, Galway, will speak on “Girls’ Global Leadership:
Alice Paul’s Legacy on the World Stage.” at the Alice Paul Institute’s
annual meeting, and a video of an international exchange between the Alice
Paul Institute’s Girls Advisory Council and the girls of Awegys Secondary
School, Kigo, Uganda, will be shown.

Grover Cleveland is the only US president born in New Jersey. His birthplace in Caldwell is often open on December 26th. Children are welcome. Admisssion is free.

In 1826, physicist Michael Faraday founded the Children's Christmas Lectures at London's Royal Institution. His goal was to communicate to children the excitement of scientific discovery. In keeping with the spirit of those lectures, Mark Croft, a professor of physics at Rutgers, and physics support specialist Dave Maiullo present a physics demonstration and lecture show for children of all ages each Dec. and on special occasions, like Rutgers Day . This event is held in the Physics Lecture Hall at 136 Frelinghuysen Road, on the Busch campus in Piscataway. Driving Directions The event is free of charge and open to the public. The demonstrations presented are based on those used in our physics courses. They were designed not just to inform but with an eye toward humor and exciting the imagination. The object of the show is to emphasize the fun in science. Demonstrations will include an exploding hydrogen balloon, a man lying on a bed of nails and the use of a fire extinguisher to shoot a person on roller skates across the room

State History Fair: May 7, 2011

Have you ever participated in a Revolutionary War military drill? Or
had the chance to plow a furrow? What about spinning wool on a real
spinning wheel? These are just a few of dozens of historical exhibits
and activities that will be featured when the "Spirit of the Jerseys
State History Fair" returns from a one-year hiatus in May 2011.

The History Fair will move from its previous home at Washington
Crossing State Park to a new venue at the Historic Village at Allaire,
Allaire State Park, Farmingdale, in Monmouth County. It will be held
on Saturday, May 7, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"New Jersey has such a rich and important history, and played such a
key role in the founding of our nation,'' said Department of
Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin. "We're pleased to
bring back this annual event to engage our residents and allow them to
experience and enjoy hundreds of years of our state's history in a
suitable and enjoyable setting."

The Spirit of the Jerseys State History Fair was first held in 2004 to
celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the creation of the New Jersey's historic
sites system. It proved very popular, drawing more than 5,000 visitors in
2009. In 2008, the History Fair received an award of recognition from the
New Jersey Historical Commission for its leadership role in promoting the
State's history.

The free event was cancelled this year due to limited resources. It will be
revived next year under the joint sponsorship of the DEP's Office of
Historic Sites and the non-profit Allaire Village Inc. Organizers believe
the new venue at Allaire will be a fitting site for historical groups to
showcase their town or community history and its importance to New Jersey.

"There was so much interest from exhibitors and park visitors that we felt
there was enough appeal to revive the fair," said Beverly Weaver,
supervisor of the DEP's Office of Historic Sites. "The fair helps
cultivate the public's awareness of New Jersey's history in a lively,
engaging way.''

The new setting at Allaire State Park is well-known for its historic 19th
century iron making town, the Howell Iron Works Company, and the antique
train that runs through it on the Pine Creek Railroad. Also, the Manasquan
River winds through the park, which is a habitat for a wide variety of
wildflowers, trees, plants, birds and other wildlife.

Some groups, already registered to participate in the 2011 History Fair,
include the Genealogical Society of New Jersey, New Jersey State Archives,
Montclair Historical Society, Alice Paul Institute, New Jersey Civil War
Heritage Association, New Jersey Lighthouse Society, Monmouth Battlefield
State Park, New Jersey Scout Museum, Egg Harbor City Historical Society
and the Wool Merchant's Daughter.

Weaver also said visitors will be able to meet Civil War "veterans," observe
open-hearth cooking and explore the craft of blacksmithing. There will
even be paranormal investigators from the Shore Paranormal Research
Society of Toms River, who will detail work they have done at some
historic locations in New Jersey.

Also among activities that visitors can experience is a period baseball
game. Next year's fair will once again feature the Flemington Neshanocks,
a 19th century baseball club. They will play the Elizabeth Resolutes using
1864 rules. Players will wear uniforms and use equipment that reflects
this time period.

Annual New Jersey Meadowlands Festival of Birding: one weekend in mid-September: Folks of all experience levels from around the state and region will come together to share their interest and knowledge of birds in a variety of venues in the Meadowlands. The Meadowlands contains over 8,000 acres of valuable wetland habitat, and is home to over 280 bird species. As in past years, the Festival is comprised of two days of activities including walks, eco-cruises, paddles, indoor workshops and presentations led by some of the area’s most accomplished and respected birders. Breakfast and lunch & keynote expected on Saturday.

Scientists Make Dinosaur Find at NJ Construction Site By MICHAEL HOROWICZ   Here’s one that will get kids and scientists all over the world very excited. A well preserved fossil of a dinosaur footprint was just found at a construction site in Clifton, New Jersey.  Three big toes of a dinosaur from the Jurassic era can be seen on the rock that's about the size of a small car.  The foot fossil will be removed from the site of the new Four Seasons at Great Notch residential complex, currently under construction in the Woodland park section of Clifton, later today by volunteers and taken to the Museum of the State of New Jersey. It will be examined by scientists at a museum facility in Trenton.  Doug Fenichel of developer K. Hovnanian Homes, tells NBC New York that his firm is working with the museum “to strike a delicate balance between preserving our history and the progress of a new community.”  Both groups plan to hold a news conference to show off the fossil before it is taken to Trenton. The 800-acre "Pole Farm" section of Mercer County Park Northwest began the 20th century as farmland, but then was converted by AT&T into what
was for several decades the world's largest shortwave transmitting station, with more than 2,000 poles supporting antennas carrying phone
calls to cities around the world. However, by the close of the century it had reverted to open parkland set aside for passive recreation, one
of the few major 20th century industrial sites in New Jersey to have vanished almost completely. Join Lawrence Township Historian Dennis
Waters for a walking tour to learn about this important story in the history of communications and to visit several locations where traces
of the past can still be seen.

About the walk: We will meet at the "pole" near the Federal City Road entrance to the park at 11:00 a.m. sharp and walk to the parking area
near the Keefe Road entrance. This will be a leisurely 1.75-mile walk on well-maintained trails over generally flat terrain, though you
should be prepared for possible wet or muddy spots and there is one small stream crossing. We may wander a short distance off the trail
once or twice. Plan on two hours, but longer if you need to walk the 1.75 miles back to your car. If you do not want to walk back, you are
encouraged to carpool and leave a car at each end. Please note that there are no restroom facilities at the park.

January 6-17 "Nearly Lear" buy tickets through New Victory Theatre (Manhattan) but at the Duke on 42nd Street, 65 minutes. Grades 9-12 / Ages 12 & up: Susanna Hamnett plays the Fool – and every other character – to tell the story of King Lear in an original, mischievous and poignant adaptation of the Shakespeare.
I enjoy going to shows where there is a question period with the actors afterward - or a related workshop, especially if I have to travel far for the event. Workshops for "Reinventing Shakespeare's Nearly Lear" at New Victory Theatre on January 15th, at noon or 4:30pm ($17). For ages 11 & up. Since it has become so difficult as homeschoolers to attend New Victory's "one school time" schows. that may be the way to go.

The United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey (UACNJ) operate an observatory in Jenny Jump State Park in Hope, NJ.

Public programs are offered every Saturday evening from April through October. These programs begin at 8 PM with a lecture on an astronomy-related topic and include observing with the 16” Greenwood telescope if the weather cooperates. Lectures are held rain or shine. Star-gazing until 10:30, weather permitting.

Those who are interested can train to become qualified to use the Greenwood telescope.

I Explore is a restricted area for children under 5 years of age and it is wonderful! They will touch, play and learn all on their level…. A Great Area! The 1826 Cooper Gristmill provides a glimpse into the rich heritage of Milltown. In the late 19th century, the town thrived; the restored and operational gristmill is one of the few survivors of that era. " India! A cradle of civilization! What will you find? The remains of 5000 year old
Harrapan cities? An early Hindu Temple (c.500 BC)? A Buddhist shrine (c.200 AD)? The garbage of a house (1850 AD)? It could be all of the above as we dig into the mysterious culture, geography and history of the sub-continent!"

Q: What exactly is an archaeology camp/dig?
A fun filled week of being able to dig for and find amazing artifacts and learn something new about different countries, geography, philosophy, ancient cultures, remains, and people. The children will also learn to solve on site archaeological puzzles for the dig they are doing.
The attending campers are encouraged and learn, with the guidance of Big Dog, to develop an interpretation and be able to present archaeological evidence from their dig by excavating the site in such a way as to maximize the preservation of information embedded in the context and embodied in the artifacts.

The participants will have a picture of what professional archaeologists do, how they do it, and perhaps why it matters, by determining:

What are the artifacts? how were they used?
How were they made? what resources used,
What is the context of the artifacts? ("in the dirt", "in a bowl"?) how did they get here? (were they lost? hidden? or thrown away?)
the problem to be solved: how we identify and interpret artifacts and their context, (was this made locally? are the resources local or were they acquired by trade? or war?)
ways to solve them: by staring, digging, processing, questioning, and
displaying the artifacts and explaining what was found creating exhibits.

The students will be led through questions like "How we know what we know about the past?" and learn to make crucial distinctions between different kinds of meaning by digging, thinking, exhibiting, and explaining artifacts.

Q: Who runs the camps?
Geof Purcell, a.k.a. Big Dog, Professor of Archaeology and a world renowned archaeologist decide several years ago that children would immensely benefit from the hands-on experience of what it's like to be an archaeologist. Mr. Purcell then created TAP-The Archaeological Perspective- to bring archaeology and children together.

Q: How long is the homeschool (day) camp?
Tuesday through Friday.

usually 10 am to 4 pm for the full day, children ages 7 and up, and 10 am to 1pm for half day campers, ages 5 to 7. (Note: Some camps run from 9 am to noon/3pm.)

Half day campers go home after lunch. In the afternoon, full day campers participate in playing strategic logical board games, which coincide with what they are learning in camp.

If you don't think your child would be ready for a full day program, or your schedule doesn't allow for it, it's perfectly alright just to participate in the half day program.

Children will "dig" mornings Tuesday through Thursday, with breaks for discussion, and their bag lunch. Afternoons are devoted to discussion, slide shows & games which re-enforce the concepts presented. They might trade resources using a board game, or strategize which expedition to fund in a card game. Friday they will set up a "museum", thinking about what they have seen & found, and the stories they built in their heads. Visitors are encouraged to come, look, and partake in the dig themed potluck.

A certain number of parents must stay at the dig - it is not for Geof & the host to supervise all 24 students! If you leave your child, be sure to leave contact information and, in case of emergency, a medical release with the host. Please inform the host and Big Dog of any allergies or special issues even if you are staying.

Q: What do the children do all day?
The dig site is divided into sections and the children are assigned a square, usually two children per square. They are given papers to map their daily dig and mark down what they find. The digging starts once all the campers have their proper digging tools and Big Dog explains the how, what, why, and where. The artifacts are then discovered, logged and cleaned. The children will also watch a slide show and hear Big Dog tell adventures tales of his travels from all over the world, all of which is tied in with the dig the children are doing.

Q: What is the cost for 2009 homeschool archaeology camp?
$170 for full day campers & $120 for half day campers.
20% discount for siblings.
$50 deposit required per child.
All checks need to be made out to TAP (short for "The Archaeological Perspective")

Q: When do we sign up?
In general, your child's spot will be secured once a deposit is received by the site coordinator. (It might be the host, or another parent volunteer.) You will also need to fill in registration forms. The final payment is usually expected about 3 weeks before the dig.

During Home School Day we offer you and your children the opportunity to visit the Village and participate in hands-on activities and participatory programs. This is a great opportunity for children to gain exposure to many aspects of 1830’s New England life in an interactive way. Also, special performances and demonstrations are planned for all audiences throughout the day. Specifics on the day's activities will be posted shortly. Pre-registration begins four weeks in advance of the date.

Each homeschool event in the year has a different focus and activities to take part in. You will receive an email notification approximately a month in advance of the event date that alerts you to the theme and activities and to the availability of the online pre-registration process.

From last year: Special performances and demonstrations, inspired by the Theme, are planned for audiences throughout the day in the Village. Also, visit the Village Craft Center to take part in a quick hands-on activity. For children ages 6-18. Opportunities at this location are on a first come first served basis. Activity fees are between $5-10 per activity.

Studios are age specific. Please register your child for only those Studios for which they are age appropriate. Also, we recommend that you register your child for no more than two Studios giving you time to visit and take part in the activities in the Village. For those not old enough to
participate in Studios, a Little Learner’s play area will be available for younger siblings and their parents to pass the time in the Museum Education building.

We offer home schoolers the opportunity to take part in 50-minute hands-on Studios which are taught by a Museum Teacher in the Museum Education building. A maximum of ten participants can register per Studio. We offer 8 to 12 age-based (example: Ages 5-7, 8-10, 11-14, and 15-17) themed Studios per hour. We offer 3 to 5 hours of Studios. We recommend registering for no more than two Studios per child. Each Studio is $5 per child.

Lunch will be sold at the Village Café counter. The Village Café will be serving pre- made sandwiches, hot soup, baked goods, water, juices, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. Limited seating will be available. For those closer to the Bullard Tavern in the Village at lunch time, the Bullard Cafeteria will be open. For those bringing your own lunch, seating will be available in the Lunch Room at Museum Education. Please understand that food and beverages are not sold here.

Remember, included with the Admission, are many performances and demonstrations in the Village to enjoy throughout the day. Information about these activities will be listed in the email notification and posted on the website Daily Event Listing a week in advance of the event day.
Also, consider participating in a craft at the Village Craft Center which is open from 9:30- 4:30. There is an additional $5-$10 fee per activity. These activities do not take reservations but will be available to you at your leisure. This will also be posted in the email notification.

Eight historic sites and museums throughout Morris County are inviting the public to "Be Our Guest" on Sunday, May 16, from noon to 4 p.m. in celebration of National Tourism Week. Participating institutions will open their doors and waive their usual admission fees during those hours, although guests are encouraged to contribute a non-perishable food item for the Interfaith Food Pantry in lieu of the normal admission fee. The event is sponsored by the Morris County Alliance for Tourism. For more information call 973-631-5151.

A restored working dairy cattle farm portraying life in the early 20th century through costumed living history, farming, and domestic skills demonstrations, and tours of the Foster family's circa 1852 Gothic Revival house.

The "Birthplace of the Telegraph," telling the story of the Vail family and their role in the early days of the Industrial Revolution and in the development of the telegraph, through hands-on exhibits, guided tours and special event weekends.
Macculloch Hall Historical Museum and Gardens, 45 Macculloch Avenue, Morristown, www.maccullochhall.org. An elegant historic house and decorative arts museum comprising ten period rooms and four exhibit galleries, two of which are devoted to the largest collection of cartoonist Thomas Nast's works in the country.
Morristown National Historical Park/Washington's Headquarters, 30 Washington Place, Morristown, www.nps.gov/morr. A national park preserving sites of the Continental Army's encampment and the headquarters of General George Washington during the winters of 1777 and 1779–80.
Museum of Early Trades & Crafts, 9 Main Street, Madison, www.metc.org. A museum exploring 18th- and 19th-century American history, with a focus on New Jersey, drawing on its collection of over 8,000 hand tools and their products to interpret the lives and technologies of men and women who lived and worked before the rise of large-scale industrialization in this country.
The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms, 2352 Route 10-West, Morris Plains, www.stickleymuseum.org. A National Historic Landmark, this 1911 log house is the former home of noted turn-of-the-century designer Gustav Stickley, a major proponent of the American Arts and Crafts movement in home building and furnishing.

Three free shuttle buses will be provided by the Morris County Park Commission throughout the afternoon. Two of the shuttles will run from Fosterfields to the Museum of Early Trades & Crafts and to Craftsman Farms. The third will run a "Morristown" loop between participating in-town attractions.

The Morris County Alliance for Tourism supports the Morris County Tourism Bureau in positioning the region as a premier tourism destination through a collaboration of interested stakeholders.

The Interfaith Food Pantry, located in Morristown, serves Morris County by distributing supplemental and/or emergency food to eligible Morris County residents in need, providing hands-on opportunities for neighbors to help neighbors, and educating the public about the issues of hunger in our area. (children 8 & up can register on line - with parental permission...) not sure if a school name is needed.

Sylvan has a "book adventure" where kids read for points. Not quite sure how enrollment works.Book Adventure is a FREE reading motivation program for children in grades K-8. Children create their own book lists from over 7,000 recommended titles, take multiple choice quizzes on the books they've read, and earn points and prizes for their literary successes. HS Terrapin Watch

Sedge Island Natural Resource Education Center Friday to Sunday, June 11-13, 2010

This 3 day program is for homeschoolers interested in New Jersey's breeding terrapin population. In addition to collecting real-world data on arriving terrapin, participants will learn about wetland ecology, wildlife biology (both game and non-game species), coastal geomorphology, human impact on fragile salt marshes, and the history of New Jersey's barrier islands. There will also be great opportunities for kayaking, seining, and learning about breeding oyster catchers & the Reclaim the Bay programs.

During the three day/two night workshop you will stay in the Sedge House, a renovated duck-hunting lodge, which is equipped with a common room, 7 bunk-rooms (you will have to share a room), a full kitchen and dining room. As part of the experience, you will live a conservation ethic. Fresh water is limited (we transport bottled water from the mainland) as is electricity a solar generator provides power. Grey water from sinks and showers is treated in a special greywater system and sewage is composted in a Clivus Multrum composting toilet.

This program is open to home school students ages 10-16 years old. Parents may attend, but must participate in the program. The cost of this three-day program is $70 per adult, $55 per student. SPACE IS LIMITED, with a maximum of 14 participants. A nonrefundable deposit of $50 is required to secure your space. The cost includes transportation to and from the island, instruction, equipment and facility use. Participants must provide their own meals and bedding.

REGISTRATION IS FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE.

Each family will be responsible for the food and preparation of one meal for the group during your the stay. On site, there is a gas range stove, refrigerator, a gas grill and a quick steamer for preparing the day's harvest, as well as all the cooking utensils you may need.

The Crisis | Only 35 percent of American high school seniors are proficient readers. Only 23 percent are proficient in math. Nationwide, only 74 percent of ninth graders graduate within four years—and that number drops to about 50 percent for black and Hispanic students.
Twelve percent of American high schools are "dropout factories"—schools where less than 60 percent of freshmen even make it to their senior year. It comes as no surprise, then, that America lags far behind other developed countries when it comes to schooling: Among large industrialized countries, America ranks last in educational effectiveness—despite spending the most.

The conventional wisdom says that our schools could be dramatically improved with better funding. If we would only "invest in education", the argument goes, our children would have a better future—particularly in urban areas, where leaky roofs, under-qualified teachers, and outdated textbooks are all too common

And so the last few decades have brought an explosion of education spending, enthusiastically approved by local school boards and state legislatures and generally supported by taxpayers. That's the moral cover under which our public school system wastes and steals billions of
dollars every year.

New Jersey offers a dramatic instance of this corruption and improvidence. After New York, no other state spends as much per pupil—but the Garden State has very little to show for its investment. Spending can exceed $400,000 per classroom, and yet only 39 percent of the state's eighth-graders are proficient or advanced readers, and only 40 percent of its eighth-graders are proficient or advanced in math. Of new high school graduates attending the state's community colleges, nearly 80 percent require remediation. More than three quarters of New Jersey's high schools have been warned that they may be placed on the state's list of failing schools. And the problem is not one of inadequate funding: Some of the worst schools receive—and squander—the most money.

This costly, unconscionable failure forms the subject of The Cartel."

Home School students and instructors are invited to Historic Speedwell for the second part of our Garden series where we will plant our seedlings in the kitchen garden. Students will also learn about the food that was eaten in the early 1800’s and how important gardens like these were to everyday people.
July 8: The Dream of Steam: Steam Power in the 19^th Century 1-3 pm
In ‘The Dream of Steam’ program, students will learn about the impact steam power had on early America. They will also participate in a hands-on activity which will result in the construction of a model steam engine.
August 12: Author! Author! Creative Writing in the Museum Setting 1-3 pm
Museum artifacts can inspire artists of all kinds, including writers. During this creative writing workshop, students will view different artifacts and exhibits and have the opportunity to learn about writing.
September 9: Right Outside the Kitchen Door: The Garden Part III, Harvest 1-3 pm Home School students and instructors are invited to join us for the third and final part of our Garden series. During this program we will harvest many of the fruits and vegetables that have been growing all season and talk about the importance of the harvest in history.
October 14: Arts Fair! 1-3 pm Our fourth annual Arts Fair! Students will be able to enter their science, craft, history, or agriculture projects to be judged based on content and presentation. The winners will receive fabulous prizes!
November 4: Practically Beautiful: Historic Crafts 1-3 pm During this session, students will discuss historic crafts such as embroidery and tin punching, learn about the need for these crafts, and learn the skills to complete a project of their own.

Congressional Art Competition

I am excited to announce that it is once again time to launch the annual Congressional Art Competition. This nationwide art competition allows Members of Congress to showcase the talent of their high school constituents and acknowledge the nation's most gifted young artists. Many students in our area have already participated in the program and earned the honor of seeing their original artwork on display in the United States Capitol.

Students are able to submit an array of two dimensional artwork including paintings, drawings, collages, photographs and computer generated art. All artwork must be original in concept, design, and execution and may not violate any U.S. copyright laws. Enclosed you will find the official announcement of the art competition to post for interested participants, guidelines for this year's competition as well as the student release forms that must accompany each entry into the competition. Information about the reception for all participants will be sent out when available.

NJ Coldwater Conservation School

The NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife and NJ State Council of Trout Unlimited are partnering to sponsor a Coldwater Conservation School in New Jersey for the first time.

The Coldwater Conservation School allows students to spend four days in the heart of trout country and explore coldwater habitats through conservation and angling activities.

The goal of the school is to foster a knowledge and appreciation of coldwater habitats using a variety of handson activities and interactive learning methods that teach the benefit of coldwater habitats. The School will give students the handson knowledge about how to care for the coldwater habitat that the trout need for survival.

The inaugural session of the school will be held at the NJ School of Conservation in Stokes State Forest, June 24-27, 2010. Checkin is at 12:00 noon on June 24, with student pickup at 12:00 noon on June 27. Cost is $150.00 per student and includes food, lodging and equipment.

Students must be 11 15 years old in order to participate. Applications for the Coldwater Conservation School are due on April 1. Students will be notified by the end of April if they are accepted.

Courant Splash is a one-day festival of classes in the mathematical and computer sciences, designed and taught by enthusiastic graduate and undergraduate students, faculty, and others associated with the Courant Institute. cSplash is an opportunity to get your feet wet in subjects completely new to you. During the program, you can attend as many talks as you want on topics in pure math, applied math, computer science, and related fields. The program is free and is open to all students in grades 9-12 (or with equivalent mathematical background) with an interest in mathematical and computer sciences. Spaces are limited and are allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis so please register early to guarantee a spot.

Ancient India: recipes

Just the start of potluck ideas - so much depends on the era and part of India!
crops: barley, wheat, rice, melons, cotton
domesticated animals: cows, pigs, buffalo, sheep
Many lived near rivers and caught fish with fish hooks.

Main foods: wheat products with barley, or rice, with fish & meat. (wheat grew more in the north & rice more in the south) After Buddhism, probably half the population was vegetarian.
In the Gupta Empire, the diet was vegetables, fruits, cereals, breads, and they drank milk.

DIET BHEL (Healthy Mixture)
½ cup whole green grain sprouts (Mwong)
½ cup sprouted earthen pot (matki)
¼ Cup chopped tomato
1 T plain yogurt
½ tsp cumin seed powder
Fresh, chopped coriander leaves (cilantro)
Salt to taste.
Directions: Mix all ingredients thoroughly and serve.

REFINED WHEAT FLOUR UPMA
1 Cup semolina (cream of wheat is very close)
2 Cup boiled water
¼ Cup each, cabbage and onion
½ tsp cumin seeds
2 tsp green goam (split dal) dal (mwong) soaked for an hour in water
4 – 5 curry leaves
2 tsp oil, 1 tsp sugar, salt to taste.
1 or 2 green chillies (chopped)
Cut coriander leaves
Directions:
1. Roast the semolina in a lightly oiled pan at low temperature until lightly browned. Put into dish and set aside
2. Put small amount oil in same pan, heat and put in curry leaves, cumin seed to crackle, then add chili pieces, cut vegetables and soaked dal and fry until brown.
3. Add roasted semolina, salt and sugar to taste. Mix well
4. Pour boiled water in the mixture, mix well and cover with lid.
Cook over slow heat until liquid is absorbed. Remove from heat, let stand 5 minutes.
Serve with freshly cut coriander leaves and sprinkle with lemon juice.

SPINACH OR FENYGREEK (Frozen Methi) ROTI (PARATHA)
Ingredients:
¼ Cup rice flour
¼ green gram dal flour (Bensan) chama dal flour (ground yellow split peas)
¼ each of jowar and bajra flour
1 ½ cup wheat flour
2-3 tsp oil
a pinch of asafetida (a type of spice)
½ tsp cumin seed powder
¼ tsp turmeric powder
2 tsp white sesame seeds
½ tsp ajwain seeds (also used for upset stomach)
½ tsp ginger paste
Salt to taste
1 cup spinach or fenugreek leaf paste

Directions:
1. Mix all the ingredients slowly in the spinach paste only. Use little water if needed. Make a, somewhat, hard dough and let stand in a covered bowl for half an hour.
2. Make small balls of the dough
3. Roll dough in a flat circle with the help of a little oil. Fold in half and again a triangle with oil.
4. Roll flat again.
5. Roast on a flat pan (tawa) over medium heat.
6. Serve with tomato ketchup, or other topping.

GREEN GRAM DAL SWEET SOOJI (In India, girls start to make semolina halvah when they are about 8 years old. The recipe is very similar.)
Ingredients:
1 cup green gram dal
1 ½ cup sugar
½ cup ghee
1-5 tsp cardamom powder

Directions:
1. Wash and soak the dal in water over-night.
2. In the morning, drain the water and grind dal in mixer.
3. In a hot pan over slow heat, sauté the ground dal in ghee till browned.
4. Add sugar and cardamom powder and mix well until sugar dissolves. Cover and remove from heat. Let stand for 4-5 minutes and serve hot.

VITAMIN SALAD
Ingredients:
½ cup grated cabbage
½ cup green gram sprouts, boiled.
½ cup finely chopped skinned tomatoes.
½ cup skinned and grated beetroot.
½ cup grated carrot
1 medium chopped onion.
½ cup boiled Bengal gram sprouts
1 cup chopped lettuce.
6-7 tablespoons curd, drained.
1 tsp finely chopped ginger.
1-2 chopped green chili.
Fresh, chopped coriander leaves
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tsp sugar
1tsp lemon juice

Directions: Chill all ingredients and mix at time of serving.

CABBAGE SALAD
Ingredients:
1 medium cabbage, grated
1 finely chopped cucumber
1 small finely chopped capsicum
1 chopped onion
½ cup roasted groundnut powder
1 t roasted sesame seeds
1 T lemon juice.
Salt, pepper and red chili powder to taste.
1. Chill all ingredients and mix together well at time of serving.

RAVA UTHAPAM (SEMOLINA PANCAKE)
Ingredients:
2 Cups semolina (Rava)
1 ½ cup curd (plain yogurt)
2 medium onions cut lengthwise.
1 finely chopped skinned tomato, salted to taste
10 tsp oil to make pancake.
½ chopped ginger
1-2 chopped green chili
½ tsp roasted cumin seed powder.
A few fresh chopped coriander leaves.

Directions:
1. Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl, to form a somewhat thick, pouring consistency.
2. Heat skillet. Thinly coat with oil. Cook on both sides until lightly browned.
3. Serve hot with green (coconut and chili or other favorite) chutney.

IDLI (RICE CAKES) – STEAM COOKED
Ingredients:
1 ½ Cup boiled (raw) rice
¾ Cup black gram dal
4 tsp. Oil.
Salt and pepper to taste.

Directions:
1. Soak rice and dal separately in water overnight.
2. Wash drain and grind to a paste separately, then mix together and set aside to ferment for 8-10 hours.
3. Apply a little warm water and salt to taste in the mixture.
4. Steam cook in a thali (flat small dish) for 15 minutes in a rice cooker.
5. Remove the container from cooker, cut the cake in squares and serve hot with green chutney.

MOONG KHICHADI (GREEN RICE) (Microwave)
Ingredients:
1 Cup uncooked rice
1 Cup Moong sprouts (green gram whole)
2-3 pinches asafetida, to taste.
¼ tsp. Turmeric powder
2 tbsp. Ghee
2 tbsp coriander-cumin seeds (roasted)
2 tsp sugar.
1 tsp chili powder.
2 tbsp grated fresh coconut.
2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander
salt to taste.

Directions:
1. Wash the rice and moong sprouts. Drain
2. Put the ghee in a glass bowl and microwave on high for about 30 seconds.
3. add the rice, moong sprouts, asafetida, turmeric powder, spices and 2 ½ cup water.
4. Cover and microwave on high for about 15 minutes. Stirring in between every 5 minutes.
5. Garnish with freshly cut coriander leaves and grated, fresh coconut and serve hot.

Note:
We can make this rice (khichadi) using vegetables like freshly chopped beans, carrots cauliflower, potato, onion, green peas or other sprouted pulses. We may add these in various combinations to make tasty nutritious dishes.

KHICHDI
1C Sago (Sabundana)(looks like Tapioca) -soaked overnight
Wash and soak in ½ C water overnight.
IN the morning add 1 T gee in hot pan. Add 1t cumin seed to crackle
2 Chopped green chilies
Add soaked Sago
½ C roasted crushed peanuts.
Add Salt to taste
Cook for 3-4 minutes over slow heat, stir,
Sweeten to taste.

Suji Halva

Ingredients:

1/2 cup suji (semolina)
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup ghee
1 1/2 cup water
1 oz sliced almonds
1 oz raisins
8 green cardamoms

Directions: How to Cook Suji Halva (Semolina Halva)

1. Boil sugar and water together for 5 minutes. 2. Heat ghee add suji and stir on a slow fire till mixture becomes light creamy in color and ghee leaves the side of the pan. 3. Add the syrup and stir briskly till it is absorbed in the semolina. 4. Mix crushed cardamom seeds, almonds, and raisins. 5. Serve hot.

The 2nd New Jersey Brigade brings the battle between the Blue and the Gray to life through camp life demonstrations. Musket and artillery drills, mail call, a bayonet drill, canon firings, a medical demonstration, skirmishes, and more!

10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Talk to the soldiers and camp followers about what life was like during the Civil War

In 2009 demonstrations included: sick call, pay call, our load in 9 demo, telegraph demo, cannon shoot off, hospital tent demonstrations, and the signal corps demonstration. Food will be provided for purchase by the Friends of Historic Speedwell, and there is an available picnic area for those wishing to bring a lunch! This a great program that the whole family can enjoy!

Historic Speedwell is located on the corner of Speedwell Ave. and Cory Rd. in Morristown. Additional parking will be available at the Alfred Vail Elementary School located ¼ mile north of Historic Speedwell, on Speedwell Ave, and a free shuttle will be provided to transport visitors to and from the site.
